REPAINTING WITH LATEX OR OIL

Determining the type of paint previously used

Oil paint can be put on a latex surface.
Latex paint can be used on a latex surface.

Latex paint cannot be put on top of an oil surface.

If latex paint is painted on top of a surface
previously painted with oil paint, it  will peel off.

Here is a simple test to determine the
type of paint used on a surface.

  • Get a bottle of rubbing alcohol  and a rag.
  • Saturate the rag with the alcohol.
  • Rub the rag on a small inconspicuous  area.
  • If paint comes off on the rag,  you know the previous paint was latex.
  • If the paint doesn't come off on the rag you know the previous paint was oil.

If you want to paint latex paint on an oil surface,
use a high quality acrylic paint.

Ask your quality paint store which acrylic to use.

If you don't want to determine whether the previous
paint is latex or oil, go straight for the oil paint.
